Mobile live streaming

When we have chosen our live streaming provider, we can get into hardware. The cheapest hardware setup we can use is free. One thing we all have is a smartphone. This can be either an Android or an Apple phone. Both of these can be good enough for live streaming when you’re in a pinch, budget or time-wise.

This means you will be limited with what you will be able to show your viewers and what you can do with live stream customising. You can only show what your camera is seeing so no logo’s, no slides and no overlays. The sound quality is often also lower.

You will also be limited in streaming services that you can use. For example, YouTube requires at least 1000 subscribers to your channel before you can do any mobile live streaming. Fortunately, the other two are a more relaxed on that front and require no subscribers.

The best and easiest way to live stream using a mobile phone is to use the app of the live streaming service you wish to use. This can be Facebook, Twitch or others.

Each of these applications has an option to live stream to the platform so that people will be able to watch what you are sending as you are sending it.

Facebook

You can broadcast to your Page, group, profile or event from anywhere in the world, including church, using the Facebook app (available on iOS and Android). To do this, you will need to do the following steps:

  1. Open the Facebook app.
  2. Click the flag at the bottom and navigate to the page, group or event that you want to live stream from.
  3. Tap the Live button just under the “Create a post” button.
  4. Add a description to your video. You can also tag friends, check in to a location and add a feeling or activity
  5. Switch the camera to the correct camera (front/back).
  6. Tap big blue Start Live Video button.
  7. Tap Finish when you want to end your broadcast.

Twitch

You can broadcast to your Twitch page using the Twitch app (available on iOS and Android). To do this, you will need to do the following steps:

  1. Open the Twitch app.
  2. Tap your profile icon on the top-left of your screen.
  3. Press the “Go Live!” Button.
  4. Switch the camera to the correct camera (front/back).
  5. Add a description to your video and select a category, which for churches would probably be “Special Events”.
  6. Press the “START STREAM” button to start the live broadcast.
  7. Tap Finish when you want to end your broadcast.
